In his address to both houses on Capitol Hill as the fifth UK prime minister in history to do so, Gordon Brown also mentioned relations with Iran.
He said: "our shared message to Iran is simple - we are ready for you to rejoin the world community."
"But first, you must cease your threats and suspend your nuclear programme and we will work tirelessly with all those in the international community who are ready to reduce the threat of nuclear proliferation", the British Prime Minister concluded.
This is while the Iranian authorities have repeatedly announced that the suspension of their nuclear programme would not be on the agenda but are ready to provide the west with necessary assurances that their peaceful and civil nuclear programme would not lead to building nuclear weapons.
