The Presidency of the European Union issued the following statement on 05 August 2005:
“The British Embassy in Tehran, acting as Presidency of the European Union, has requested an urgent call on the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Iranian Judiciary to make representations on the situation faced by Akbar Ganji.
The EU has previously called on the Iranian authorities to free him immediately on humanitarian grounds. In his role as local Presidency of the EU, the British Ambassador to Tehran has also requested that the Iranian authorities allow him to visit Mr Ganji in the hospital where he is being held.”
