Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was president of Iran from 1989 until 1997 and stands as one of the favourites among the candidates to win the forthcoming presidential elections. Last night he gave an exclusive interview with the BBC and spoke directly to Britain and the West. The core issue discussed in this interview was Iran’s nuclear program and Iran’s relationship with the West.
Should Rafsanjani become the next president, he asserted that Iran would not give up the development of civilian nuclear energy. However, he reasserted that he has no intentions of developing nuclear weapons and he will adhere to IAEA (International Atomic Energy Association) obligations concluding that he was optimistic about building relations with the West.
