Paykan car production has finally ceased despite similar claims made previously in recent years. This comes after an announcement earlier this month from the Iranian Minister for Industry and Mines, that after 40 years production the Paykan is to be phased out.
Originally based upon the British Hillman Hunter design from the 1960s, the Paykan is to be replaced by the Samand - another British design. In addition to the production of the Samand (pictured above) will be the Renault L-90 model.
The Paykan is driven by around 40% of Iranians and is popular due to its affordability and easy maintenance. However, a growing car manufacturing market, increasing international competition and environmental concerns have led to a halt in Paykan’s production.
Iran’s growth in car manufacturing was further symbolised by its recent intentions by Iran Khodro to buy the failing British car manufacturer, MG Rover. However, plans to buy MG Rover proved to be unsuccessful. Iran Khodro, which has been producing Paykan for the last 40 years and is now introducing new models such as the Samand and the Peugeot 206, is the leading car manufacturer in the Middle East.
