Queen pioneers rock in Iran
30/08/2004

Following a relaxation in Iranian laws governing culture, a collection of the Greatest Hits of Queen has been officially released. The laws now permit music that contain a social theme to be released for general sale. The cassette costs less than $1(US) and also includes translated lyrics and explanatory notes.

This has already proven to be popular amongst the youth of Iran whom have been at the centre of the liberal reform movement within Iran. Extraordinarily, 70% of the population within Iran is under the age of 25. The relaxation of music laws is a recognition of such reform movements by the Islamic regime.

The lead signer/song writer of Queen, Freddie Mercury, had Persian as well as British heritage and was proud of both. His life however was full of controversy culminating with his death in 1991 from AIDS. The music of Queen continues to be some of the most popular in the world today.

Other musicians to be officially released include Elton John, Julio Iglesias and the Gypsy Kings.
