Recent conferences in the field of Persian studies have focused on a specific chronological period of Persian history, considering various aspects of the period’s arts, culture and history. The focus of this conference instead is a specific medium, namely metalwork, in a broad period of time (the whole Islamic period of Persian history). While both approaches have their merits, the latter will allow a more intense examination of the field of metalwork studies than other recent conferences have allowed. One of the aims of the conference is to highlight the importance of technological analyses; trade, cultural and technical exchange with other regions, the role of the patron and craftsman and various regional schools of metalwork will also be examined. As the conference is to take place at the Chester Beatty Library, it is especially appropriate that metalwork in light of manuscript studies also be examined.
